Valdis Alijevs
I am a landscape photographer based in Dublin. My work focuses on the notion of the journey, documenting the discoveries I make exploring different topographies. I grew up and spent most of my childhood in the area between Dublin and Wicklow. My personal connection to this place brings me back again and again to this unique terrain.
Old Military Road
This project is based on the Old Military Road, located in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains. Construction of the road began in 1800 to open up the mountains to the English military and assist them in quelling any remnants of the 1798 rebellion. The project considers the different stories and folklore associated with the Old Military Road, recording the subtle variations in the landscape as it has changed over time. I am documenting the legacy left behind from colonialism, which is evident in the cultural and social processes that have made their mark on the land. The post-colonial significance of this road may also be considered in relation to the upcoming commemoration of the Irish Civil War.
